Learn to Love Letter Writing Project (2021)

“Learn to Love” (2021) was a love letter writing project in conjunction with the virtual exhibit “Reciprocity” at Woman Made Gallery in Chicago. I was uniquely matched with an artwork and submitted a love letter responding to the work of art.

Dear Vetrata Colorata,

I'd like to start by addressing your soft space. The space of imagination and inquiry. Of fractaled daydreams and emotional amalgamations. It's a space I often find myself in. In a sense, it is the special place where I met your gaze. It is a thin place. In folklore, this is a space between the physical and spiritual realms. I suppose the liminality of thin spaces is what makes them exciting: The rush of energy. A burst of color. Chemical changes. Emotions. Thin, sticky tendrils of thoughts leading towards hunger. Hunger excites me.

And I am hungry for you dear, as I am in need of some stimulation. You excite me with your shape. An object within itself. A labyrinth of identity. Internal. External. The heart. The eye. The experience. Weathered. Where do you begin? End?

Your digital presence is an ache and I long to be beside you. To face you ... to trace the frenetic threads leading towards fertile chaos.

Until then I pass the time by counting the wily, organic compounds: uno, due, tre ...

Till we meet here or there,
Verónica Anne Salinas

untitled, iowa (2020)

(video, 5:00)

This short film and original score explores the spirit of the artist Ana Mendieta in the Iowan landscape. It was created on site-specific grounds on which Mendieta conducted many of her earth-body pieces. Many of these documented works were given the title “Untitled, Iowa” as an acknowledgement of her presence within the landscape.

Often overlooked in influence, Iowa (U.S.) is the place where Mendieta immigrated to from Cuba, spent most of her short life, and is forever laid to rest. It is also the land where she emerged from as an artist at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

This short is done as a memorial. A portrait. A spiritual conjuring.

The film was screened at the SAIC Film, Video, New Media, Animation and Sound Festival in partnership with the Gene Siskel Film Center in 2020.
